When Motion Capture Goes Off-Script
A hard lesson learned was underestimating the impact of real-time mocap performance boundaries on final composite quality, which almost tanked a critical trailer shot. We were capturing a creature interaction with our hero on a virtual set using an OptiTrack system and decided to push the mocap actor to really 'sell' a powerful impact, thinking we'd just roto and rebuild later if needed. What went wrong was that the actor's exaggerated, improvised flailing during the impact animation caused her body parts to frequently clip through the virtual ground plane and character model in ways that were incredibly difficult, if not impossible, to mask cleanly in post without utterly destroying the performance's energy.
My initial assumption was, 'It's mocap, we can fix anything in Blender or Nuke.' The reality was that fixing constant intersections created by the actor's elbows, knees, or even head popping through the virtual floor or the hero's body required frame-by-frame mesh rebuilding and animation correction, which became a monstrous task. The solution, which I wish we'd implemented from day one, was to establish clear, physical performance boundaries and provide the mocap actor with real-time visual feedback on these limits during the take, using simple virtual markers to guide them. Simpler still, sometimes a less 'realistic' but cleaner performance is far more valuable than one that's technically brilliant but compositing-hostile.
