On-Chain Distribution: The Inevitable Death Knell for Producer Equity
On-chain distribution, often touted as the revolutionary solution for transparent royalties and direct access, is a wolf in sheep's clothing for independent film producers. While the promise of immutable ledgers and automated payments sounds appealing, the inherent lack of structural protections in decentralized systems will ultimately erode a producer's ability to negotiate and enforce their equity, particularly in the critical recoupment phase.
The current system, though flawed, at least offers legal recourse and established financial frameworks for producers to chase down their splits. With on-chain distribution, the immediate payout to every token holder or rights owner, often in micro-transactions, bypasses the essential role a producer plays in recouping initial investment and overhead BEFORE profit participation. Imagine trying to claw back advances or production costs from a thousand individual wallet addresses, each receiving fractions of a cent, versus a single, legally accountable distributor. This fragmentation of revenue streams, coupled with the difficulty of enforcing complex waterfall agreements in a purely decentralized environment, will lead to a race to the bottom, where producers are left holding the bag on unrecouped expenses.
While advocates point to smart contracts automating payouts, these contracts are only as good as the legal frameworks backing them. Without a centralized entity to hold accountable, who arbitrates disputes over gross vs. net, or unexpected expenses? How do producers protect themselves from a project, once on-chain, being pirated and redistributed without any mechanism for compensation? The current legal and financial infrastructure, imperfect as it is, provides a necessary bulwark for producers to safeguard their investments and their share of the upside. Removing that structure, in the name of decentralization, risks leaving them utterly exposed. Are we truly solving distribution issues, or simply creating an even more opaque system for recoupment?
