DIY Sound Blankets: A Love-Hate Relationship with Heavy Lifting
For a recent indie short, we needed to significantly deaden reflections in a particularly echoey warehouse location on a shoestring budget. My solution was to DIY sound blankets using heavy-duty moving blankets and grommets. I found the 72"x80" size to be the most versatile, and we used a simple grommet tool kit to add reinforced hanging points every 12 inches along one edge. What worked incredibly well was their effectiveness; even with the raw material, they significantly reduced reverb, making the dialogue captured by our MKH 416 much cleaner. What didn't work, or rather, was incredibly challenging, was the sheer weight and bulk of transporting, hanging, and adjusting them across a large space. We had to invest extra time in rigging sturdy c-stands and crossbars, sometimes double-stacking for maximum absorption, which was physically exhausting and time-consuming. It saved us hundreds on proper acoustic panels, but cost us in crew fatigue and setup time. How do others balance cost-effective sound treatment with practical on-set manageability for larger spaces?
