When do 12-month roadmaps utterly fail for freelance film G&E, and how do you adapt?

Hey everyone,

I'm finding myself at a bit of a crossroads. I've been trying to map out my next year, looking at skill development, networking, and even some gear purchases, like finally upgrading my older Litepanels to a couple of amaran 150c units or maybe an Orbiter for some key light work. The idea of a structured 12-month roadmap sounds great on paper, but my recent experience on a short where we're bouncing between an FX6 and a URSA Mini Pro G2, with call times shifting daily, makes me wonder how realistic that is.

I've tried scheduling specific weeks for 'learning DMX' or 'portfolio updates,' but then a last-minute gig comes up, or a planned shoot gets pushed, and it all goes out the window. Currently, I'm gaffing a series of corporate spots, and the schedule is fluid, to say the least. It feels like every time I try to plan, the unpredictable nature of freelance filmmaking throws a wrench in it.

For those of you who've been doing this for a while, when does this 'textbook' approach to planning a year ahead completely break down, and more importantly, what are your strategies for adapting when the industry constantly pulls you in different directions?
