On-Set Data Capture for Smoother VFX Integration

To improve our VFX pipeline on a recent corporate explainer, we experimented with a more rigorous approach to on-set data capture. What worked incredibly well was having a dedicated iPad Pro running a lidar scanning app, alongside taking extensive 360-degree HDRIs with an Insta360 X3, and using a simple sphere and chrome ball setup for every VFX shot. We shot on an FX9 with Canon Sumire Primes, and having that detailed environmental data, especially the lidar scans, allowed our VFX team to place CGI elements, specifically some animated product models, with far greater accuracy in terms of scale and perspective. It drastically reduced iterative adjustments in post. What became apparent, though, was the need for a more standardized naming convention and folder structure for this data, as it still took time to sort through and correlate scans and HDRIs to specific takes. The sheer volume of raw data also created a temporary bottleneck for our data wrangler. Is there a more efficient, perhaps automated, way to link on-set data capture to specific camera takes without manual logging?
