Actors Need to Stop Self-Taping for Free, It's Undervaluing Our Craft

Actors should absolutely refuse to self-tape for free. The expectation that performers will invest hours, equipment, and personal space to produce professional-grade audition videos, often for multiple rounds, without a single penny of compensation, is an exploitative industry practice that needs to end. This isn't a quick selfie; this is a significant chunk of labor.

I’ve collaborated with countless actors helping them refine their self-tapes, and the process is far from trivial. It involves memorizing lines, blocking, finding appropriate wardrobe, securing a suitable background, sourcing decent lighting, recording multiple takes, editing, sound mixing, and often dealing with specific file formatting requirements. This is work, plain and simple, and it directly benefits the production. Casting directors are effectively outsourcing unpaid labor to narrow down their pool. If a production requires this level of pre-screening, they should compensate the talent for their time and technical effort, even if it's a nominal flat fee per tape.

I understand the counterargument that self-tapes open up opportunities for actors outside major hubs and reduce travel costs. And yes, for many, it's preferable to missing an audition entirely. However, that convenience should not come at the complete financial expense of the actor. The industry has normalized this unpaid work, but just because it's common doesn't make it right. Aren't we overdue for a conversation about fair compensation for all stages of an actor's contribution, including the audition?
