Script Supes: Tech & Coverage, Efficient options or overshooting temptation?
Hey everyone, Nadine Rousseau here, a working Script Supervisor. I've been wrestling with a question, especially on some of my recent indie features and even a short-form commercial where the DP was experimenting with FPV drones. We all aim for 'getting options without overshooting,' but with the recent explosion in tech (better mirrorless cameras making moves simpler, readily available drone footage, and even virtual production environments starting to pop up) I'm honestly wondering how it's impacted your approach.
On one hand, it feels like these tools should make getting varied coverage more efficient. You can get a complex crane shot feel with a drone in minutes, or quickly reframe digitally in VP. But on the other, I've seen directors, and even myself, think 'we could get another angle here because the camera’s so light,' or 'let's do one more drone pass, just in case.'
So, from your perspective, does this new technology genuinely make it easier to get your coverage options efficiently without overshooting, or do you find it sometimes creates a temptation to just keep rolling and over-cover, simply because the tech makes it 'easy' to do so?
