Orbiter for Realistic Sun - A Delicate Dance
On a recent historical drama, we were shooting an interior scene in a period-accurate apartment with large windows, aiming to simulate late afternoon sun streaming through. I tried using an ARRI Orbiter with the Fresnel lens attachment as our primary 'sun' source, placed fairly far back to create distinct, hard shafts of light. What worked incredibly well was the Orbiter's precise color temperature control and its built-in gels; I dialed in a slightly warmer CCT around 3400K and added a subtle 1/4 CTO from the digital library to push it toward that golden hour feel without needing physical gels. We paired it with a haze machine to really articulate the beams.
