Entry-Level Production Designer, Doc Film

Documentary Production Design Los Angeles, CA entry Budget: Co-producer credit + backend

Hey filmmakers, I'm a SFX makeup artist working on an upcoming independent documentary about the subculture of competitive miniature model painting. It's a really fascinating, vibrant world, full of intricate details and dedicated artists, and we want to capture that visually. We're looking for an entry-level Production Designer to join our small, passionate crew based here in Los Angeles. Your main responsibilities will involve developing the visual aesthetic of the documentary, scouting and transforming practical locations, sourcing props, and ensuring continuity across our various shoots. We'll be visiting artists in their home studios, at conventions, and in their local hobby shops, so we're looking for someone who can help us make each space shine and tell a story through its design. You'll work closely with the director and DP to execute their vision. While this is an entry-level position, some experience with set dressing, art department work, or event design would be a huge plus. We don't require you to own specific gear, but creativity and resourcefulness are essential. Please have a portfolio or reel demonstrating your visual design capabilities, even if it's from student or passion projects. Our anticipated shooting schedule is spread across 4-6 weeks, likely starting in late summer or early fall, with mostly weekend and flexible weekday hours. We'll provide a modest budget for materials and cover transportation expenses during shoots. This is a partnership opportunity, offering a Co-Producer credit and backend participation, so we're looking for someone dedicated to seeing this project through with us.
