Production Designer, NYC Documentary
Looking for a talented Production Designer for an upcoming independent documentary project. This film explores the underground art scene of 1980s NYC, so we're aiming for an authentic, gritty, and visually distinctive aesthetic that reflects the era and the unique creative spirit of the time. Think found objects, resourceful builds, and a knack for creating a lot with a little. Key responsibilities include collaborating closely with the director to develop the visual language of the film, sourcing and fabricating props, set dressing, and managing the art department budget. We'll be shooting primarily in and around New York City. You should have 3+ years of experience in production design, ideally with some documentary or indie narrative credits. A strong portfolio showcasing your ability to create compelling environments and your understanding of period aesthetics is essential. While we don't expect you to bring a full art department kit, experience utilizing practical resources and a creative approach to problem-solving are a must. Shoot dates are approximately 4-5 weeks, staggered over the fall, with prep starting in late summer. This is a passion project, so compensation is deferred points plus a deferred fee, typical for independent documentary work. We'll provide craft services and transportation to and from locations. I'm a Rigging Gaffer on the project myself, so I understand the indie grind and we're building a committed, creative team.
