When is premium audio gear truly necessary vs. 32-bit float value options?
Hey everyone, Mateo here. I'm hitting a crossroads on a few projects and would love to get some real-world input. As a color timer, I'm often handed footage shot on everything from an AMIRA to a GH6, and the sound quality varies wildly.
I'm specifically thinking about my own workflow for smaller, interview-heavy shoots or corporate gigs where I'm sometimes pulling double duty. Most times, I'm using an a7S III with a decent video mic, but for anything more serious, I rent. I'm trying to decide if it's time to invest in something like a dedicated Sound Devices 833 and quality wireless (DPA 4018s, etc.), or if I can truly get by with something like a Zoom F8n Pro, leveraging its 32-bit float for those unexpected peaks and troughs.
My concern isn't just about 'good enough' but about 'professional level' results given the budget. How do you all weigh the benefits of top-tier preamps and converters against the safety net and cost-effectiveness of 32-bit float in more affordable recorders? When do the benefits of premium gear truly outweigh the convenience and price point of modern value options?
