Applying High-End Finishing Principles on a Micro-Budget?

Hey everyone,

I'm a VFX artist currently working on a passion project, a short indie drama. We're trying to hit a really polished, cinematic look, and I've been doing a ton of research into color grading and finishing workflows. I keep seeing recommendations for things like dedicated HDR monitoring setups, often citing a $15-40k price tag, and general finishing costs for an indie feature landing in the $15-60k range.

My current setup is pretty modest. We shot on an FX30 with some decent glass, and my home grading suite is just a calibrated consumer display. We've been primarily focusing on getting solid exposure and balancing the primaries, but I can't shake the feeling we're missing something crucial when it comes to translating that to various viewing platforms without access to professional-grade tools.

How do filmmakers and colorists reconcile these high-end finishing principles with a truly micro-budget reality? Are there specific tricks, alternative workflows, or priorities you focus on when you simply don't have that kind of capital for monitors or dedicated facilities? I'm trying to figure out how to bridge that gap without compromising the final look too much.
