Exposure Control: Auto-Exposure Tools Are a Crutch, Not a Creative Solution

Let's be clear: relying on auto-exposure tools in color grading software like DaVinci Resolve's 'auto color' or even basic 'auto contrast' functions in other NLEs is a fundamental compromise of creative intent. While superficially convenient for rough first passes, these algorithms prioritize statistical average over artistic vision, often leading to homogenized, lifeless images.

My workflow, and that of most experienced colorists, centers on manual primary corrections, lift, gamma, gain, and offset, precisely because it grants granular control over every exposure zone. I'm not looking for an 'average' brightness; I'm looking for the perfect luminosity for a character's face, the subtle highlight detail in a cloudy sky, or the specific mood conveyed by shadow depth. Auto functions consistently miss these nuances, crushing blacks or blowing out highlights in an attempt to hit a neutral histogram, disregarding the source material's dynamic range or the director's desired look. They flatten the image, removing the very texture and dimensionality we work so hard to create. Are we truly advocating for tools that make our images look more generically 'correct' at the expense of bespoke, emotionally resonant grading?
