New Directors & Intimate Scenes: Avoiding Pitfalls with Consent & Integrity?
Hey everyone,
I'm Megan Foster, a script supervisor on a few indie features recently. I've been noticing something on set, especially with newer directors tackling intimate scenes. The consent workflows are becoming standard, which is fantastic, but sometimes it feels like the on-set execution gets a bit... clunky, or even loses some of the scene's original intent in the process. It's a delicate balance, obviously.
I've tried prepping directors with clear consent forms and discussing boundaries pre-shoot, but I'm looking for a deeper understanding of where things commonly go wrong. From your collective experience, what are the most frequent pitfalls or mistakes new directors make when trying to implement consent protocols while also maintaining the artistic and dramatic integrity of an intimate scene? And most importantly, what practical advice would you offer to help them avoid these issues?
Thanks in advance for sharing your insights!
