Bootstrapping vs. Runway: Getting Started with Minimal Capital?

Hey everyone,

I'm a boom operator looking to produce a short creative film. I've been doing a lot of research on getting these types of projects off the ground. I keep seeing advice about needing a significant runway, like $800k+, to really make a splash. At the same time, there's always the 'bootstrapping' philosophy.

My current approach is to leverage ShareGrid for more specialized gear, use free tools like DaVinci Resolve for editing and color, and offer crew equity where appropriate to keep cash outlays low. I've been able to pull off some smaller passion projects this way.

But how do you really bridge that gap between the 'big money' advice and the reality of starting with almost no capital, especially when aiming for a higher production value? Is it just a matter of scale, or are there specific strategies that truly let you punch above your weight class on a shoestring? I'm genuinely trying to understand how to reconcile these two opposing ideas.
