No-Budget Filmmaking: When to Bend the 'Rules'?

Hey everyone,

I'm directing a short film right now, think passion project, no budget beyond what I can scrounge up. We’re deep in the weeds, and I’m constantly bumping up against the 'ideal' practices you read about in filmmaking guides.

Specifically, things like the 3-2-1 backup rule for footage, or the advice against ever 'owing' someone a favor. In theory, I get it. But practically, when my sound person is literally just a friend with a boom pole volunteering, and my 'backup system' is an old external drive and a prayer, I find myself making hard choices.

I'm curious about real-world experience here. When you’re truly out there with zero resources, what are the things you've found you can realistically compromise on without completely derailing the project or burning bridges? Are there specific 'rules' that you, as experienced low-budget filmmakers, have learned are okay to bend without major consequences?
