Identifying and Fixing 'Just a Backdrop' Worlds in Scripts

Hey everyone,

I'm deep into development on a new project (a sci-fi/fantasy blend) and I keep running into this note about 'worlds that don't affect story.' It's a concept that really resonates, but I'm struggling to concretely identify when my world-building is just... ornamental. I've tried outlining key world rules and then seeing how many scenes would fall apart if I removed them, but it still feels a bit theoretical.

So, what's a clear, undeniable sign in a script that the world is serving purely as a backdrop, and not truly integrating with the plot? And more importantly, what’s a killer technique or an immediate rewrite thought process to tie the plot directly to a specific world rule, making that rule absolutely critical to the progression or resolution of the story? Any practical examples would be hugely appreciated.
