Bootstrapping vs. Funding: Balancing Practicality with Ambitious Projections?

Hey everyone,

I'm a production sound mixer, and I'm currently trying to strategize the launch of a passion project, a narrative short that I'm also producing. I've been looking at different funding models and business plans for independent film, and one thing keeps tripping me up.

I've seen some guides that suggest an aggressive, nearly million-dollar runway for even a modest project to ensure proper compensation, marketing, etc. However, these same guides often simultaneously preach the gospel of bootstrapping, leasing gear (like from ShareGrid), leveraging free software like DaVinci Resolve for post, and even offering crew equity to keep day-one costs down.

My dilemma is how to reconcile these two seemingly contradictory approaches practically. If the long-term projection is a significant spend, how do you genuinely get started with minimal capital while still being taken seriously and attracting talent? How do you balance the 'bootstrap now' reality with the 'plan for proper funding later' ideal?
