Day/Night Flips on a Tight Budget - How Do You Manage?

Hey everyone,

I'm Grace Nakamura, a casting director, and I'm currently working on a really neat indie drama. We have a fantastic script, but like most indies, our budget is super tight. We've got a key location, this incredible old diner, that is absolutely perfect for a pivotal scene. The problem is, we need to shoot both a day scene and a night scene there, and due to costs, we only have the location for one 12-hour day.

Now, I've always heard that 'day/night flips' (shooting day for night or going back and forth) are incredibly difficult and can really mess up a schedule, especially with lighting changes. The guides always warn against it. But what do you actually do when you're in this kind of low-budget bind? We can't afford to lose this location, and we definitely can't afford a second day there. We've considered trying to schedule the day scene right at the beginning and the night right at the end, but even that feels like a huge logistical challenge within a single day.

Has anyone tackled something like this successfully on a low-budget shoot? What are your strategies for making it work without completely burning out the crew or compromising the look?
