Navigating Insurance Requirements on an Ultra Low-Budget Indie, GL Limits & Bundling?

Hey everyone,

I'm Fatima, a sound designer, currently trying to get an ultra low-budget indie feature off the ground. We're talking shoestring. The director is really struggling to figure out the insurance side of things, specifically about general liability limits. Everything we're seeing suggests minimum $2M/$4M GL limits and often encourages bundling policies for better coverage.

On a project where we're shooting on a donated a7S III with a single Helios Tube, and I'm bringing my personal 4017 and 888, those numbers feel absolutely massive. We've looked into basic production policies, but the quotes for those higher limits are just not feasible on our budget.

For those of you who've successfully produced or worked on genuinely ultra low-budget indie films, what's your experience been with these general liability recommendations? How did you balance the need for adequate coverage, especially for filming in public spaces or with borrowed gear, against a severely limited budget? Is there a more realistic approach for projects that barely have a crew, let alone millions for insurance?
