Early 'Want vs. Need' Integration: Workflow Insights?
Hey everyone,
I've been thinking a lot about the 'want vs. need' dynamic in character arcs. It's something I usually refine during later drafts, but I'm trying to see if I can bake it in much earlier. I'm currently outlining a new thriller and feeling a bit stuck on how to concretely apply this concept from the get-go.
Historically, I tend to write a first draft based on action and plot beats, and then go back to layer in the emotional stakes and character 'needs.' I'm wondering if there's a more efficient way to approach this. For those of you who successfully integrate a character's 'want' and 'need' right from the initial stages of your screenwriting process, what does your personal workflow look like?
Do you create detailed 'want' and 'need' charts or breakdowns during your outlining phase? Or is it a more intuitive process that unfolds as you're breaking story, before you even hit page one? Looking for any insights on how to make this a foundational element rather than a revisionary one.
