Moving Beyond Script Hand-Off: Director-Writer Collaboration Potholes?

I'm Nina Kowalski, a working screenwriter, and I'm really trying to evolve my approach to collaboration, particularly with directors. I've done the traditional 'write the script, hand it off, wait for notes' dance plenty of times. But lately, on a couple of indie features and shorts, I've been actively attempting a more integrated, 'development together' model from conception through pre-production.

It feels promising, we're building a shared vision, which is fantastic. However, I've noticed a few bumps along the way, some misunderstandings, or times where the 'collaborative' aspect feels more like two individual visions slightly clashing. I'm wondering if I'm hitting some common beginner traps in this new territory.

For those of you who've successfully navigated a truly collaborative Writer-Director relationship, especially beyond the old 'script hand-off' way, what pitfalls should a beginner like me absolutely avoid? What are the subtle dangers or common missteps when trying to build a healthy, integrated partnership from the ground up?
