Freelance DPs: Hybrid Kit Strategy for My Gaffer Business?

Hey everyone, as a working Gaffer, I’m constantly thinking about how DPs manage their gear, and I want to apply some of that strategy to my own business. I'm seeing a lot of DPs talk about the 'hybrid kit' philosophy: owning a solid core set of gear and then renting specialty items as needed. For me, that usually translates to owning a good set of standards like an LS 600d Pro and some Titan Tubes, and then renting things like an Orbiter or a SkyPanel S60-C for bigger jobs.

My typical projects range from corporate interviews using an FX9 to smaller commercials often shot on an ALEXA Mini. I've tried owning a few key accessories and renting everything else, but sometimes I feel like I'm losing efficiencies. Other times, I feel over-invested in a light that sits unused. How have you DPs adapted this core-and-rent philosophy to fit your own freelance cinematography business and the typical scale of your projects? What's your sweet spot for owned vs. rented?
