Making the Green Pitch: Justifying Sustainability Costs to Producers?
Hey everyone,
I'm Gaffer Tomáš Kratochvíl here, usually wrangling my AMIRA or sometimes an ALEXA Mini with a mix of LS 600d Pro and M18s. I've been trying to push more sustainable practices on set lately. Things like upgrading our lighting packages to more efficient LEDs (the amaran 150c has been great for some gigs) or even suggesting an eco-manager for larger productions.
My problem is, when I bring this up to producers, especially the budget-conscious ones, their eyes glaze over at the upfront costs. I get it; every crown counts when you're trying to make a film. I’ve tried explaining the long-term energy savings with LEDs, or the potential for positive PR, but it often feels like it's falling on deaf ears.
For a recent narrative project, where we were using an ALEXA 35, I tried to make a case for a dedicated person to manage waste and sustainable sourcing. The producer just couldn’t see past the additional salary line item. Does anyone have experience successfully pitching these kinds of sustainability investments to producers who are really focused on the bottom line? How do you reframe it to be an immediate benefit rather than just a future one?
