Sustainable Practices for the Indie Filmmaker: Where to Focus First?
Hey everyone,
I'm Derek Huang, a 1st AC, and I'm looking to genuinely incorporate more sustainable practices into my independent filmmaking efforts. On my last short and a couple of passion projects where I was directing, I found myself doing a lot more than just pulling focus. Think juggling pre-production on an FX6 shoot one day, then lighting with a few Forza 500 IIs and two Titan Tubes the next, all while trying to keep things organized.
I've been trying to go paperless with Scriptation for my AC work, and it's been pretty successful. I'm also mindful about power consumption on set, especially with all the monitors and charging needs. But for an independent filmmaker who really does wear many hats (writing, directing, sometimes even some AC or grip work) what are the most critical sustainability tasks to focus on? Beyond Scriptation, should I be doing a waste audit on my micro-budget sets? Looking into electric generator options for smaller lights? I'm trying to figure out where I can make the biggest impact without completely overhauling every single step of my limited resources. What are your thoughts on where to start for someone like me?
