Indie Film: Paid Resources vs. Free Trust-Building for Performance Quality?

Hey everyone,

I'm Megan Foster, a Script Supervisor primarily working in indies. I'm gearing up for a low-budget drama and have been thinking a lot about performance quality. We all want the best from our actors, especially when resources are tight.

I often see advice about budgeting for casting sites, dedicated rehearsal spaces, and software like Frame.io for feedback. These are definitely valuable. But at the same time, I’ve found some of our most impactful performances come from spending extra time on informal table reads, character workshops at a cast member's home, or just general relationship-building hangouts before a shoot. These are mostly 'free' activities that build crucial trust and understanding.

My question is, for a truly indie film, how do you all strike a balance? How do you prioritize allocating limited funds to paid resources like casting platforms or a formal rehearsal space, versus investing time in these more organic, free trust-building activities, all with the goal of maximizing performance quality on screen?
