Impact of Virtual Production on Key Grip/Gaffer Roles?
Hey everyone, Darius Pope here, Best Boy Electric. I'm hitting a wall with something that's been on my mind. Our last shoot was a smaller commercial, mostly on a green screen for virtual backgrounds, shot on a KOMODO, and frankly, my gaffer was pulling double duty in ways I hadn't seen before. Setting up SkyPanels and Orbiter units for the practical lighting to blend with the virtual environment was one thing, but then they were also deep in conversations about LED wall calibration and pixel density.
It got me thinking about the bigger picture. With all the virtual production stages popping up, and the talk of 'hybrid' roles, how do you all see the traditional job descriptions and required skillsets for a Key Grip or a Gaffer evolving? Specifically, what's changed in the last three years in terms of what's expected of them, beyond just their core responsibilities? Is it more programming, more VFX understanding, or something else entirely?
