Impact of Affordable AF Anamorphics on Fast-Paced Sets?
Hey DPs, Tanya Volkov here. I've been noticing a definite shift on sets recently. We used to consider anamorphic a very specific choice, often involving more precise focus pulling and slower setups. Now, with more affordable autofocus anamorphic options popping up, I'm genuinely curious about how this is affecting you all.
On a recent indie short shooting with an AMIRA and using some new AF anamorphics, I found myself relying on the autofocus more than I ever would have expected, especially during some handheld sequences. It definitely sped things up, but I'm wondering if this is influencing shot design more broadly? Are people pushing tighter shots, or different camera movements, knowing AF can keep up? And on the crew side, has anyone seen a reduction in focus puller requirements or a change in their role on faster commercial or indie gigs? I'm trying to wrap my head around the workflow implications.
