C-Series Character vs. Master Anamorphic Precision: When to Choose?

Hey everyone, Omar Hassan here. I've been wrestling with a creative choice lately and would love to hear your thoughts.

I'm prepping for a period drama short film, shooting on an ALEXA Mini, and we're aiming for a really specific, almost painterly feel. Traditionally, I lean towards clean, crisp imagery (think ARRI Master Anamorphics, which I've used on plenty of Steadicam gigs), but this new project feels different. I'm considering renting some vintage Panavision C-Series anamorphics, specifically for their flares, softness, and overall 'flawed' character.

My concern is, when does that organic imperfection actually serve the narrative better than pristine technical perfection? I've done some tests with a borrowed C-Series set, and while they're gorgeous, I worry about losing resolution or sharpness in critical moments. On the flip side, the Master Anamorphics are undeniably perfect, but sometimes that perfection feels a little sterile for what we're going for.

For those of you who've made these kinds of lens choices, what was the deciding factor? When did embracing the 'imperfections' truly elevate the story?
