When Does the 'Textbook' Freelance Roadmap Fall Apart in Reality?

Hey everyone, as a 1st AC, I’m constantly trying to level up and stay organized. I've been looking at a few popular '12-month career roadmap' guides for freelance filmmaking, you know, the ones that suggest specific milestones for networking, skill acquisition, and kit building. It all looks great on paper: Month 3, learn advanced focus pulling techniques; Month 6, invest in a decent follow focus or my own array of Helios Tubes; Month 9, prioritize projects with an ALEXA 35 or V-RAPTOR. It's a nice, structured plan.

But honestly, my actual experience feels way more chaotic. One month I’m pulling focus on an indie short with a Pocket Cinema Camera 6K G2, and the next I’m last-minute filling in for a commercial shoot with an ARRI. Gaps between jobs are unpredictable, and my learning opportunities often dictate themselves. When does this 'textbook' approach inevitably break down with the sheer unpredictability of freelance work, and what are your best strategies for adapting when the carefully laid plans go out the window?
