When is a 'flawed' vintage lens superior to a perfect modern one for storytelling?
Hey everyone, I’m grappling with a creative choice on my current narrative short. We're shooting on an AMIRA and I'm pushing for some Panavision C-Series anamorphics. I love the way they look, the flares, the slight fall-off, the softness. My director, however, is a bit hesitant, leaning towards the ARRI Master Anamorphics for their technical perfection. He’s all about sharpness and consistency. I get it, those Master Anamorphics are incredible, but something in my gut says the C-Series would serve the story better, which is a period drama with a hint of melancholy. I've tried showing him some side-by-sides, highlighting the 'character' of the C-Series, but it's a tough sell when the imperfections are so obvious next to the clean Masters. In what specific scenarios have you found that embracing the 'flaws' of vintage glass actually elevates the narrative more than pristine modern optics?
