Camera Op here: Integrating Pre-Viz for Better DP/Actor Comms?
Hey everyone, as a camera operator, I'm constantly looking for ways to streamline on-set communication, especially with the DP and talent. For my last indie feature, shot on a KOMODO-X with primarily Atlas Orion anamorphic lenses, I tried using Shot Designer for a few blocking heavy scenes, and also did some simple phone video rehearsals with the director for complex camera moves with the Steadicam. For a few scenes using the ARRI AMIRA on an upcoming short, I want to be even more proactive.
My intention was to give the DP a clearer visual of my proposed operating, and for actors to see the frame and their marks relative to the camera. It felt like it helped a bit, but I'm curious if I'm missing a trick here. Have any of you successfully integrated tools like Shot Designer, or even just basic phone rehearsals, into your pre-production workflow to really improve that communication loop with your DP and actors? What worked for you, and what pitfalls did you encounter?
