Transitioning to Scene-Referenced HDR: What Pitfalls Should I Watch Out For?
Hey everyone, I'm Rohan, a DP primarily working on commercials and narrative shorts. I've been shooting on my ALEXA 35 and Orbiter lights for a while now, largely in a display-referred space, and we're starting to get more requests for HDR deliverables. I'm keen to make the jump to a scene-referred workflow to really optimize for those new demands, but I'm also really wary of common new-learner mistakes. I've been doing some testing with different LUTs but feel like there's a bigger paradigm shift I'm missing. What are the most common pitfalls or beginner mistakes you see filmmakers making when they first try to move from a Display-Referred to a Scene-Referred mindset, especially regarding HDR grading and monitoring? I'm trying to avoid those headaches myself and would love to learn from others' missteps.
