I'm diving deep into my current script, a sci-fi thriller with some fairly heavy philosophical undertones, and I'm really trying to make sure I have a solid theme statement that actually drives every single scene. Not just a sprinkle here and there, but truly foundational.

The advice out there always harps on this, and I get it conceptually. But I'm starting to wonder about the execution. For those of you with more experience, what are some of the most common pitfalls or mistakes you've seen newer screenwriters make when trying to apply this concept? Are there specific clichés, thematic missteps, or even just clumsy ways the theme statement ends up weakening rather than strengthening a script?
