Navigating Festival Submissions on a Micro-Budget: Prioritizing & Waivers?

Hey everyone,

I'm Naomi Blackwell, a sound mixer by trade, and I recently co-produced a short documentary on a shoestring budget. We're really proud of the finished product, and naturally, we're looking to take it on a festival run.

I've been looking into submission fees, and a guide I saw mentioned that festival runs can easily hit $1,000-$5,000 just in fees. This is a pretty daunting number for us, as our whole production budget was barely more than that. We've tried reaching out to a few festivals directly for fee waivers, but haven't had much luck yet.

For those of you who have navigated festival runs with micro-budgets, how do you prioritize which festivals to even submit to? Are there specific strategies for securing fee waivers or grants that I might not be aware of? Any advice on making the most of a limited festival budget would be greatly appreciated.
