Messiest Continuity Saves: Beyond the Book Solutions?
Hey everyone,
I'm Erik Lindström, a production sound mixer, and I've been wrestling with a particular scene on a project shot with an ALEXA Mini where dialogue continuity is a nightmare. Our last location had a lot of unexpected street noise bleeding into what were supposed to be quiet interior takes. We're talking intermittent sirens, construction, the whole nine yards, and of course, it didn't align perfectly with the 'clean' takes from other angles.
My usual strategy involves meticulous booming with my MKH 8060 and careful lav placement, often running two Sync E units for redundancy. I've been trying to find natural gaps or use alternate takes, even cross-fading tiny snippets of room tone from quieter moments, but it's really showing up during the dialogue edit. It's got me thinking about how often we're forced to get creative when continuity gets thrown out the window.
What's the absolute messiest real-world scenario you've faced trying to maintain dialogue continuity? And more importantly, what unconventional, not-strictly-by-the-book solutions did you employ that actually saved the day?
