When is the 'Textbook' DIT/LTO Workflow Impractical for Run-and-Gun Docs or Indie Shorts?
Hey everyone,
I'm finding myself scratching my head after reviewing some data management 'best practices.' They all talk about dedicated DITs, checksum verification for every transfer, and LTO archiving, which I completely get for large-scale productions.
But for my world, jumping between a FIlmConvert shoot on an FX3 with an MKH 416, then a quick social piece on a KOMODO, usually run-and-gun with a skeleton crew, it just feels... impossible. I'm usually the camera op and the data wrangler, dumping cards to two G-Tech drives, praying nothing goes wrong. I’ve done this for years with mostly good luck, but the 'textbook' approach makes me wonder if I'm just playing with fire.
At what point does that ideal workflow become genuinely impractical due to budget, time, or crew size? And more importantly, what are the 'good enough' compromises you've found for reliable data management on true low-budget, fast-paced projects?
