Altering Formal Structures: Writing Act Two Scenes Out of Order?
Hey everyone,
I'm deep into outlining a new sci-fi feature, and I've hit that familiar Act Two wall, things are feeling a bit... linear. I've been reading some general advice online that suggests tackling Act Two scenes out of sequence to keep momentum going, especially when you're feeling bogged down.
My usual process is pretty rigid, scene by scene, following a beat sheet. For this project, I even tried jumping to a few key 'midpoint' or 'all is lost' scenes first, just to see if it sparked something, but it felt a little disjointed when I went back to fill in the gaps.
So, my question is: How have you adapted or personalized formal screenwriting structures to fit your own creative process, particularly for Act Two? Are there specific methods you use to write scenes out of order that still keep the overall narrative cohesive?
