Shrinking Pre-Launch: Real-World Experience vs. 6-12 Week Guides?
Hey everyone, I'm Terrence, a DIT mostly working on commercials and narrative shorts. I've been diving into a lot of the common advice about pre-launch phases for new software/services, you know, the 6-12 week build-up recommendations for list building, content, etc. My current project, a bespoke DIT scripting utility, is something I'm really excited about, but the timelines I'm usually dealing with on set (think quick turnarounds with an AMIRA or even an FX3 on a run-and-gun doc) just don't always align with that extended pre-launch runway.
I tried a condensed 4-week push for an earlier tool, mostly low-key social posts and direct emails to a small network, but it felt a bit rushed and didn't generate the buzz I’d hoped for. Had a couple of good beta testers from it who were using a Pocket Cinema Camera 6K G2, but it wasn't the widespread engagement the guides promise.
So, for those of you who aren't operating with a huge marketing budget or a dedicated team, how have you actually adapted that recommended 6-12 week pre-launch phase to fit your real-world project timelines and limited list-building resources?
