1000-nit Grading vs. Real-World Consumer TVs - DP's Perspective
Hey everyone,
I'm Tanya Volkov, a working DP, and I've been pondering something with my recent projects, particularly narrative shorts shot on an ALEXA Mini with older anamorphic glass. My colorist always pushes for a 1000-nit reference monitor workflow, which makes perfect sense for accuracy in the grading suite, especially when we're hitting those high-contrast scenes lit by an LS 1200d Pro.
But I'm genuinely curious: when does this 'textbook' approach start to fall apart or become less effective when our work actually hits consumer TVs? We all know consumer sets have vastly different peak nit levels, and their proprietary tone mapping algorithms are a black box. How do you guys account for that translation from a pristine 1000-nit grade to a living room setup? Are there specific scenarios where that 'ideal' grade just doesn't carry over well?
