Smart Bulbs & Practicals: Updating My Approach?
Hey fellow gaffers,
I'm finding myself at a bit of a crossroads with practical lighting these days. With the explosion of smart bulbs, affordable LED ribbons, and all sorts of other off-the-shelf solutions, my usual selection process for incandescents and gels feels a bit... outdated. I'm currently prepping a short film shoot, mostly interiors, shooting on an ALEXA Mini, and I want to really dial in the practicals.
I've dabbled with some basic RGBW fairy lights for background accents before, and they've been handy. But when it comes to dimming curves and achieving specific CCTs or even precise hue control for a hero practical in the foreground, I'm still relying on older methods.
For those of you who've embraced these newer technologies, how has your approach to practical bulb selection, dimming, and color control evolved? Are there specific tools, apps, or techniques you've integrated into your workflow? I'm open to anything that helps achieve a more polished look.
