Balancing Passion Projects and Client Work: Is 60/40 Realistic?

Hey everyone,

I'm Sarah Chen, a cinematographer constantly trying to navigate the waters of this industry. I recently heard a broad recommendation about aiming for a 60/40 split between passion projects and client work. On one hand, the idea of dedicating more time to creative, fulfilling projects is incredibly appealing. I’ve got a short I’m dying to shoot on an ALEXA 35, pushing some creative lighting with SkyPanel X and Orbiter units.

However, the reality of paying for gear maintenance, and just life in general, usually means I'm taking on more commercial work. While some of it's great, like the recent corporate shoot with an ALEXA Mini LF, a lot of it isn't driving me creatively. I’ve tried to carve out time for my personal work even during busy periods, sometimes shooting a test during a lunch break, but a 60/40 split feels ambitious.

For those of you who have been in this game for a while, how have you personally balanced your creative ambition with the need for consistent income? Did you find a ratio like 60/40 effective, or did you discover a different approach that worked better for you?
