Insurance Pitfalls: GL vs. WC for New Filmmakers?

Hey everyone,

I'm Marcus Tillman, a Foley artist, and I'm gearing up to try my hand at producing a short film for the first time. We're looking at using an ALEXA Mini with some old Cooke anamorphics, so it's a step up from my usual sound work. I've been doing my due diligence on the insurance side, and honestly, it's a jungle out there.

I've seen general liability (GL) and worker's compensation (WC) coverage highlighted as common trouble spots for first-timers. Specifically, underinsuring GL and misclassifying workers for WC are described as major pitfalls. I'm trying to make sure I don't stumble right out of the gate.

From those who have navigated this before, which of these two mistakes (underinsuring GL or misclassifying for WC) do you see new filmmakers most frequently fall into? And, what's one single, most impactful step I can take to proactively avoid that specific mistake?

Any real-world advice would be a lifesaver. Thanks!
