When Theory Meets Harsh Reality: Optioning & Purchasing My Script?

Hey fellow creatives, Nina here. I'm knee-deep in trying to navigate the option and purchase agreement for my latest feature, a psychological thriller I'm really proud of. I've read all the standard advice about fair terms, typical percentages, and what to look out for. It all sounds so straightforward on paper.

But the reality feels... different. I'm getting interest, which is great, but the offers are nowhere near what I've been told is 'ideal.' One producer is pushing for an option period that feels ridiculously long with a tiny fee, practically owning the material without much commitment. I’ve tried explaining the standard industry practices, but it feels like I'm talking to a wall. I'm worried about locking it up for too long without proper compensation.

So, I'm genuinely curious: what's been your most challenging real-world experience trying to get a fair deal for your writing? Where did the theoretical 'best practices' for options and purchases totally hit a brick wall, and how did you actually adapt or navigate it?
