Low-Budget Indie Insurance: $2M/$4M GL Limits & Bundling Policies - How to Balance?
Hey everyone, as an AD, I've been seeing an increasing emphasis on robust insurance for productions. I'm currently trying to get an ultra-low budget indie narrative off the ground, think a skeleton crew, using my C70, a couple of Forza 500 IIs, and renting an MKH 416. We’re working with literally pennies.
I’ve been told the standard recommendation is $2M/$4M general liability limits and to bundle policies for everything from equipment to E&O. I get why this is important (protecting the production, personnel, locations, etc.) but for a film with a budget that barely covers craft services and a few days of rentals, these premium quotes are making my head spin. We're looking at numbers that could easily be 10-15% of our entire production spend.
We’ve tried getting quotes, explaining our micro-budget, but the numbers don't really budge. What are practical, actionable strategies for indie filmmakers with extremely tight budgets to navigate these insurance recommendations without sinking the project before it even starts? Are there specific types of policies for micro-budgets or ways to satisfy requirements without breaking the bank?
