When Production Management Meets Reality: Production Designer's Plea for Workflow Advice
Hey everyone, Camille Dubois here, Production Designer for a mid-budget indie feature we're currently in pre-production on. I'm genuinely curious about something that’s been on my mind. We're trying to implement a really thorough 'Producer's Workflow Bible', you know, meticulous calendars, shared docs for every department, robust version control for breakdowns and budgets. On paper, it's beautiful. It promises seamless communication and efficiency.
However, we all know film sets are... well, film sets. My biggest clash between this ideal system and real-world chaos has been around art department requisitions and last-minute set dressing changes. I've been trying to keep everything updated in our shared system, but when the director suddenly wants a different wallpaper swatch or an entirely new prop on set that day, the system tends to crumble as everyone just grabs their radios. I've tried assigning a dedicated PA just for system updates, but even that gets bottlenecked.
What’s been your biggest 'real-world vs. ideal' clash with these comprehensive workflow systems, and more importantly, how did you manage to get things back on track?
