Real-world LUT/CDL Governance with Tight Deadlines?
Hey everyone, as a DIT, I'm always looking to refine my pipeline. I've got my ideal setup for managing show LUTs and CDLs: ACES working space, meticulous version control, daily reports for the D.P., all the good stuff. I'm usually working with an AMIRA or V-RAPTOR XL, sometimes an ALEXA Mini, and lighting like the Forza 720B or SkyPanel X.
My problem isn't the technical know-how, but the real-world chaos. When we're slammed, second unit is calling for a different look, VFX needs a clean plate, and editorial is already cutting with proxies that have an old baked-in LUT. It feels like I'm constantly firefighting to maintain the 'single source of truth' for the look, especially when new CDL changes come in late.
I try to consolidate everything, communicate constantly, and even built a quick script to re-export common formats, but it often feels like I'm patching leaks rather than preventing them. What have you found to be your biggest challenge in maintaining tight governance over show LUTs and CDLs under pressure, and how have you adapted your ideal workflow to the messy reality of production?
