Beyond Netflix: What are successful doc distribution strategies looking like in 2026?
Hey everyone, happy to connect with you all. I've been working as a Script Supervisor on a couple of independent documentaries recently, and honestly, the landscape feels tougher than ever for getting them seen. We're completing principal photography on a really compelling true-crime exposé, and the director is starting to get really antsy about distribution. I know the big streaming deals are fewer and farther between these days, and just 'hoping for Netflix' feels like a non-strategy. We've talked about film festivals, of course, but what else are successful documentarians doing right now to get their films out there and reach an audience? Are we talking more indie theatrical runs, self-distribution to niche platforms, or something else entirely? Any concrete examples of what's working these days would be hugely appreciated.
