Solo Operator Audio Pitfalls: What should I REALLY be watching out for?
Hey everyone, Ben Castillo here, usually wrangling stunts but trying to expand into some smaller, more personal projects. I keep hearing this mantra that sound is more critical than image, and I’m finding myself a little out of my depth. I’m starting to shoot some interview-style content, usually just me with my V-RAPTOR XL, maybe a Pocket Cinema Camera 6K G2 as a B-cam, and I've got an MKH 50 going into a MixPre-6 II. I'm trying to be diligent, monitoring with good headphones.
My problem is that even when I think I'm getting good audio, sometimes in post, things just don't sit right. It's either too boomy, or I’m picking up HVAC I didn't notice on set. When you're running everything yourself, it feels like there's so much to miss. What are the most common audio pitfalls solo operators fall into, and more importantly, how do you seasoned folks proactively avoid them?
