When to go premium vs. budget for audio gear (Sound Devices vs. Zoom, 32-bit float)?

Hey everyone,

I'm a VFX artist, but I've been doing a lot more on-set work lately, and that includes tackling audio on smaller projects. I'm currently prepping for an independent short we're shooting on an ALEXA Mini, and the budget is tight enough that I’m re-evaluating our sound kit. We’ve been using a Zoom F8n Pro with some Deity mics, and the 32-bit float has genuinely saved my bacon more than once when things got unexpectedly loud.

However, I keep seeing arguments for investing in top-tier gear like Sound Devices 833s and DPA 6060 lavs, even if it means compromises elsewhere. The robust build and professional features are appealing, especially for more demanding shoots. But is the audio quality jump always worth prioritizing over the flexibility and forgiveness of 32-bit float and more affordable options, especially when dealing with less experienced crew or unpredictable environments?

How do you all decide when to really push for the premium audio kit versus making the most of capable, more budget-friendly gear?
